    Spot the error and rewrite the correct sentence - 01 Mark

    Points to Remember

    1] We have to find out a single mistake (error) from the sentence. Which may be grammatical or any other.
    2] Write that error and explain it
    3] Rewrite the correct sentence.
    4] The are some common words where we find errors

    A) Singular and plural words as follows
    1] The phenomena has been observed by us.
    Ans: The error in the sentence is the use of helping verb ‘has’. The word phenomena is plural word so there should not be “has” but have. The correct sentence is:  

    The phenomena have been observed by us.
    2] Bacteria is using up most of the oxygen
    Ans: The error in the sentence is the use of helping verb ‘is’. The word Bacteria is plural word so there should not be “is” but are. The correct sentence is: 

    Bacteria are using up most of the oxygen.

    B) Stative Verb

    Stative verbs are verbs that express a state rather than an action. These verbs are not usually used with – ing in continuous tenses. We use the simple tenses for them.
    Example: I am liking to see movies at the theatre.
    Ans: The error in the sentence is the use of ‘am liking’. The verb ‘like’ is a stative verb so it is not used in present continuous tense. The correct sentence is:
    I like to see movies at the theatre.

    Example : I think the teacher was satisfying with my speech.
    Ans: The error in the sentence is the use of “was satisfying”. The verb ‘satisfy’ is a stative verb so it is not used in present continuous tense. The correct sentence is:
    I think the teacher was satisfied with my speech.

    (They usually relate to thoughts, emotions, relationships, senses, states of being and measurements.)

    C) Use of  “to and than”

    Generally, comparative degree ends with ‘ior’ takes ‘To’ after them, instead of ‘than’.
    Some examples of comparative degree that takes ‘To’ are: inferior, superior, junior, elder, senior, anterior, posterior prior, prefer and interior,
    E.g. 1] I prefer tea to coffee.
    2] He is senior to me.
    3] Mr. John viewed as superior to the black members.
    But comparative degree ends with ‘er’ or having more with them takes ‘Than’ after them, instead of ‘to’.
    Some examples of comparative degree that takes ‘Than’ are: better, greater, more beautiful etc.
    E.g. 1] English is more difficult than Hindi.
    2] Prevention is better than cure.
    3] Sachin is taller than Mohan

    D) Use of  “Uncountable nouns”

    There are some uncountable nouns (followed by singular verbs) don’t take the articles a/an, many, few and plural form: like furniture, scenery, luggage, temper, hair, knowledge, equipment, pottery, music, jewelry etc.
    E.g. 1] The sceneries at the shivaji garden attracted me.

    Ans:  The scenery at the shivaji garden attracted me.

    3] Mr. John viewed as superior to the black members.
    But comparative degree ends with ‘er’ or having more with them takes ‘Than’ after them, instead of ‘to’.
    Some examples of comparative degree that takes ‘Than’ are: better, greater, more beautiful etc.
    E.g. 1] English is more difficult than Hindi.
    2] Prevention is better than cure.
    3] Sachin is taller than Mohan

    D) Use all the rules of voice, preposition, degree, tense etc. to find out the errors.

    “Susan gave me a really nice bouquet of flowers.” 

    3] India is the more strongest country in the world.

    Ans: The error in the sentence is the Use of ‘more’. In superlative degree no need to use more before the third form of the adjective. The correct sentence is:
    India is the strongest country in the world. 

    4] Summers in Delhi are extreme hot.

    “Summers in Delhi are extremely hot.”
